“I think the best decision I ever made was to stay independent; there are certain freedoms I get to enjoy that I feel I wouldn’t be able to if I was signed to a label.”
So said an obviously happy and excited Kitchie Nadal, who treated members of the Philippine media to an exclusive lunch performance recently at the Awakening Church at the Gozon Compound in the city of Malabon. Barely days in from her current home in Spain, the acclaimed singer-songwriter found herself thrust into a busy schedule of rehearsals and promo for her upcoming solo concert entitled Same Ground: Kitchie Nadal’s 20th Anniversary Concert, happening this June 2nd at the New Frontier Theater in Cubao, Quezon City.
The homecoming show is slated to be a celebration of Nadal’s monumental journey in Philippine music as one of the biggest-selling and most influential music figures. Though she originally got her start fronting the alternative/pop rock band MOJOFLY (whose biggest singles were “Another Day” and “Minamalas”), she rose to prominence as a solo artist in the early 2000s, with the singles “Same Ground,” “Bulong!!!” and the arena anthem “Huwag Na Huwag Mong Sasabihin.”
Twenty years after the launch of her self-titled debut album, she’s still as relevant as ever, still included in Spotify Philippines’ Top 10 most-streamed female artists, and has resurfaced among the Gen Z crowd who rediscovered her impact on Y2K pop culture and fashion.
The concert—produced by Big Brew and Rolling Gum—features her contemporaries and friends Barbie Almalbis, Lougee Basabas (of MOJOFLY fame), Acel Bisa, Hannah Romawac, and Monty Macalino (of MAYONNAISE), among others.
